DIRETIVA DE SEGURANÇA

Machinery directive and safety standards

The machinery and safety directive is currently evolving.

Metal Work are intended to make interpretation of the rules as simple as possible.

List of main standards:

Number English name Notes
EC 2006/42

Machinery directive
Product conformity declaration

Does not apply to pneumatic components, which are not machines or quasi-machines.
EN ISO 13849-1 Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems, part 1: General principles for design As far as we are involved,it applies to pneumatic components used for SAFETY functions.
EN IEC 62061 Safety of machinery- Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable control systems
ISO 19973 Pneumatic fluid power- Assessment of component reliability by testing Allows calculation of the reliability index b10 d

Machinery directive

The Machinery Directive, EC 2006/42, does not apply directly to Metal Work components, which are not considered "machines" or "quasi-machines", nor are they safety components. Both CETOP (European Fluid Power Committee) and the Machinery Working Group of the European Commission have made a clear statement in this sense.

Please refer to the attached CETOP document.

The design and manufacture of Metal Work components must be such that the complete machine complies with the fundamental health and safety requirements. As a guarantee of this, Metal Work has drawn up declarations of Product Conformity in accordance with directive 2006/42.

Safety system

A safety system designer who applies EN ISO 13849-1 must calculate the performance level (PL)To do this, he needs to know the b10 d * value of the pneumatic components forming the safety systems to calculate the MTTF d (mean time to dangerous failure).

* The b10 d is an index of reliability and is defined as the number of cycles until 10% of the components fail dangerously.
It must be declared by the manufacturer of the pneumatic component. It can be determined with reference to ISO19973.

EN 62061 requires the SIL (Safety Integrity Level) to be calculated for safety systems. To do this for pneumatic components, the designer must refer to the PL defined in EN ISO 13849-1. This means that the b10 d is an index that is also required by anyone applying EN 62061.

Metal Work has determined b10 d values for all its products and lists them in the document entitled "Reliability_b10 d".
